Assuming things, something I shouldn't do, but could this license plate refer to a member of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 2014? The academy graduates approximately a thousand midshipmen annually. Graduates are commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Initially, the course of study in the mid-1800s at the Naval Academy spanned five years, the first and last spent at the school, the others at sea. Among the school’s landmark achievements was the winning of the 1907 Nobel Prize in Physics by an instructor and student, for accurately measuring the speed of light. Among the school’s sports history are Olympic Gold Medals in 8+rowing, NCAA national championships in fencing, and Heisman Trophies won by Joe Bellino and Roger Staubach. Earning a far more prominent place in history was Rear Admiral Alan Shepard, the first American in space aboard the Mercury Program capsule Freedom 7. Conversely, the Anchorman Award is given to the midshipman at the academy who graduates with the lowest grade point average, earning him or her a dollar from each of their classmates.
