Military ID (A work in progress.)

The Korean DMZ, what is known as the 38th Parallel, is not a straight line. Two to three miles wide, centered by what is called the MDL (Military Demarcation Line), denotes South Korean territory from that of North Korea. “The Z,” as it is known locally, meanders up and down along hills, old rice paddies, trails and roads. It’s a harsh “no man’s land,” with brush and overgrowth untouched since the Korean War ended. For a period, five decades ago, 1st Lieutenant Pete Wallace, the proud owner of the “7 DIV” license plate and who shared this information with me, served in A Company with the Army’s 7th Division. He was responsible for a mile and a half of the “Z’s” distance.
