The Lincoln Highway was one of the first transcontinental highways in the United States and among the first designed expressly for automobiles. Our current Interstate Highway System was championed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, influenced by his experiences as a young soldier crossing the country in the 1919 Army Convoy on this highway, averaging less than 6 mph.
