Shelby’s history, beginning in 1891, is synonymous with seamless steel tubing and bicycles. The Shelby Cycle Manufacturing Company opened in 1895, producing 100,000 Ideal bicycles in its first year. In the 1930s Shirley Temple and other actors rode Shelby bicycles in movies. Today restored Ideal and Shelby bicycles are prized possessions and have been auctioned for as much as $7000 per bike. While those bicycles are no longer in production, today ArcelorMittal employs 650 people to continue the seamless and welded steel tubing operations in the city.
