Cottage industries abound along the highway, with some selling firewood, cut flowers, baked goods, and farm produce, while others offer handmade items. The birdhouses are something of a passion for Kathy, who lives in Shelby. Made from old barn wood, they are something she enjoys making and has been selling off and on for some time. In our conversation, she told me that she makes them "Just for fun, for something to do," adding, "They have been well received."
