The surprise 1968 Tet Offensive, the attack from the Viet Cong and other military elements, named for the lunar new year festival, marked a major escalation in the war and at the time was the largest military campaign of the Vietnam War. Fighting around the American combat base at Khe Sanh continued for two months. The Silver and Bronze Stars shown here are among the highest military medals to be earned; the Silver Star is the third-highest military decoration for valor in combat, awarded by the United States Armed Forces. It ranks below only the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, and Air Force Cross, awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States.
