Military ID (A work in progress.)

In my Mountain Home, Idaho conversation with Jack Walborn, an ardent pilot and caretaker of antique warbirds, the word “passion” was offered, defining his vast knowledge and interest in military aircraft. With his WARBRD plate, he honors his grandfather, George, a B-17 radio operator, and his father, Chester, known as "Soapy," who enjoyed a 30-year USAF career, flying nearly a dozen different aircraft, everything from B-25s to F-111F fighter-bombers. He would reach the rank of colonel, doing two tours in Vietnam, the first at Cam Ranh Bay flying F-4s, and the second at Ca’ Mau flying O-1 Birddogs. Jack’s office is filled with mementos of his father, with models of the aircraft he flew, including a special photograph from his father's last USAF flight, piloting an F-111F. In the black and white photograph, young Jack, age four, is handing his smiling father a celebratory bottle of champagne, a tradition among Air Force pilots, fitting for the end of a brilliant military career.
